There are a variety of facials available in Singapore, all designed to target specific skin concerns and deliver some much needed TLC to our skin. Although facials differ in type and techniques, they all produce the best results when accompanied by appropriate aftercare.
In this article, we’ll go through crucial do’s and don’ts after a facial, to help you maximise the effectiveness of your treatment and ensure that your skin stays healthy longer.
Dos After a Facial
Right after your facial treatment, try to carry out these simple do’s to optimise your results.
Hydrate
Remember to stay hydrated. Water works wonders for the body and skin cell health. Try to drink at least 8 glasses or 2 litres of water every day to keep yourself hydrated. It also helps to avoid beverages that could dehydrate you, such as those with caffeine and alcohol.
Gentle Care
Treat your skin gently, especially if your facial involves using an energy-based device, such as laser therapy, or mild exfoliation. You may experience some redness and skin sensitivity post-treatment, making gentle care crucial.
Use a gentle gel or foam based cleanser to cleanse the skin, and avoid exfoliants for at least a week after your treatment. Follow up with a gentle toner and moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated and nourished.
Sun Protection
Sun protection is crucial after your treatment, especially if you’ve had peels or extractions. Sun exposure can increase your risk of hyperpigmentation or dark spots.
Opt for a broad spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF30 and apply this 30 minutes before a day out in the sun. Remember to re-apply every 2 hours!
Follow Professional Advice
As all treatments vary, your therapist may give you specific post-treatment care instructions. Following their advice will ensure that you take the right steps for recovery.
It also helps to schedule regular follow-up appointments with your therapist so they can monitor your progress and address any concerns that arise.
Healthy Lifestyle
Adopting a healthy lifestyle can also do wonders for your skin.
- Nutrient-rich diet — Eat fresh fruit and vegetables, which are rich in nutrients and support your skin’s repair.
- Regular exercise — Exercise for at least 30 minutes every day to improve your overall health and improve blood circulation.
Adequate sleep — Sleep is crucial for your body’s cell repair and regeneration. This includes improving skin health for a healthier complexion.
Manage Stress
Stress can significantly impact your skin health, affecting its ability to heal and worsening other skin conditions. Try practising relaxation techniques like mindfulness and deep breathing to effectively manage stress levels.
Monitor Your Skin
Pay attention to your skin. If you experience severe redness, sensitivity, or breakouts, consult your therapist immediately and schedule a follow-up session. This will allow them to address any issues or concerns, and provide a specialised skincare routine if needed.
Don’ts After a Facial
Conversely, there are certain things we should try to avoid after a facial to ensure that the skin heals well and maintains the results.
Avoid Heavy Makeup
Avoid heavy makeup for at least 24 hours to prevent clogging the pores and to allow your skin to breathe and heal, especially if your skin still experiences some sensitivity after the facial. If you must use makeup, opt for non-comedogenic products that are less likely to clog your pores.
No Exfoliation
Avoid exfoliation at least 3-5 days after your treatment as it may be too harsh on treated skin, causing more sensitivity and skin irritation. Steer clear of scrubs, exfoliating cleansers, microbeads or chemical exfoliants.
Don’t Touch Your Face
Avoid touching your face as this could transfer bacteria from your hands to your freshly treated skin, increasing your chances of infection or breakouts. Touching your face after a facial may also cause irritation and redness.
Avoid Sun Exposure
Often, a facial encourages cell turnover, revealing the newer skin underneath. Sun exposure, however, may reverse these effects by damaging the skin with UV light and counteracting the benefits of your facial.
No Strenuous Activities
Avoid strenuous activities at least 48 hours after your treatment to allow your skin some time to recover and reduce your risk of skin irritation. Excessive sweating could also lead to breakouts or clogged pores, which, in turn, cause acne.
No Picking or Popping
Avoid picking or popping your skin right after your facial. Aside from potentially introducing bacteria and causing infection, picking at your skin can also lead to skin damage, which causes scarring and delays your healing.
Can I get a facial and aesthetic procedure on the same day?Â
Yes, you can. You can also get a facial before your aesthetic procedure e.g. botox, but it is recommended to wait 1-2 weeks after a facial to get an aesthetic procedure.Â
