In the world of aesthetic energy‑devices, Lumenis has long been a household name – especially because of its M22 platform, which clients and even us love due to its versatility and prowess in treating troubled skin types.
We’ve got our hands on its newer system, the Stellar M22, and after hours of in-house testing we can’t wait to share it with you.
Here’s a detailed comparison to help you understand what’s new and improved.
What Is the Original Lumenis M22?
The Lumenis M22 is a modular, multi-application aesthetic device. It’s designed to handle a wide range of skin concerns using four core technologies:
- Universal IPL (with OPT™/Optimal Pulse Technology for more controlled IPL pulses; making treatments safe and comfortable)
- ResurFX™ (non-ablative fractional laser that delivers micro‑beams to create fractional injury, which stimulates collagen without damaging the surface)
- Multi‑Spot Nd:YAG laser for vascular lesions e.g. acne marks, textured skin
- Q‑Switched Nd:YAG for pigmented lesion e.g. pigmentation, sunspots, rosacea
What’s New With the Stellar M22?
The Stellar M22 builds on the Lumenis M22, but with powerful improvements.
Here are key changes to look forward to:
XPL™ (Expert Pulsed Light)
This is Stellar’s IPL technology. It comes with eight filters and advanced sub-pulsing (MSP) for more accurate energy control – essentially more stable and safer on more skin types. The improved engineering also allows us to move the handpiece across your skin more efficiently, which means faster treatment sessions. Clinical tests of this technology have shown up to 75% clearance of vascular and pigmented lesions from just one session.
Improved ResurFX
The fractional resurfacing module is more refined in Stellar M22 – it supports a “BrushFX” mode that enables a softer, blended resurfacing effect. This is what will give you that dewy, air-brush skin texture.
The 1565 nm wavelength and the CoolScan algorithm, which help with minimising downtime, are retained.
Better Laser Modules
The Multi‑Spot Nd:YAG and Q‑Switched Nd:YAG remain but with improved control and power. Specifically Q-Switched Nd:YAG now comes with 1064nm wavelength to treat deeper pigmentation, 6-8 ns pulses to deliver higher peak energy without burning surrounding skin, and more versatile spot size.
Upgraded Usability & Comfort
Ergonomic handpieces, longer SapphireCool lightguides (for better skin contact and visibility), and an improved user interface make treatments more comfortable and efficient. Continuous contact cooling is maintained, reducing the risk of overheating and making sessions more comfortable.
Photofabulous
This is one of Stellar M22’s flagship hybrid treatments – it combines XPL IPL and ResurFX in a single session. The IPL deals with pigmentation and redness, while ResurFX rebuilds collagen for texture.
| Feature | Lumenis M22 (Original) | Stellar M22 (Upgraded Generation) |
|---|---|---|
| Overall System | Older platform, already well-regarded | Newest version with upgraded engine & interface |
| IPL Technology | OPT™ IPL (Optimal Pulse Technology) | XPL™ IPL (Expert Pulse Light) – more stable, more precise, safer on more skin types |
| Energy Delivery | Good pulse consistency | More accurate pulse shaping, meaning more effective pigment & vascular clearing with less heat |
| Cooling | Standard contact cooling | Enhanced SapphireCool contact cooling – more comfort, fewer hot spots |
| Speed | Normal shot-by-shot pulses | Glide Mode for quicker passes, faster full-face treatment |
| Treatment Modules | IPL, ResurFX, Nd:YAG | Same modules but improved performance and better integration |
| Comfort Level | Some heat sensation expected | Noticeably more comfortable due to better cooling & pulse control |
| Skin Safety | Safe | Higher safety margin, especially for darker skin tones |
Does This Mean the Early Lumenis M22 Is No Longer Useful?
Not at all. If you are a beginner to laser facials or energy-based facials, then you will find the Lumenis M22 to still be suitable for you. Lumenis M22 has been used at SkinLab for years and has proven to be effective for common skin concerns like pigmentation, redness, and texture.
But if you want the newest technology for long-term skin improvement and treatment versatility, Stellar M22 offers the latest upgrades. Treatments are faster and gentler, helping you see better results with minimal downtime. If you have been doing medi-facials consistently now or simply want a high-value, low-maintenance treatment, we recommend upgrading to Stellar M22.
Note: There are many counterfeit M22 devices in the market, so it’s important to ensure you’re getting the real treatment for your safety. SkinLab has been an early adopter of Lumenis M22 – every of our outlets uses authentic M22 devices. Stellar M22 is currently available exclusively at our Wheelock Place, Tampines 1 and Junction 8 outlets.
Here’s how to tell between a real vs counterfeit M22 device.
